Don't.You. Believe. It

A legend in his own mind.

I was checking out the American Patrol website and noticed a picture of the exalted governor of my home state, Bill Richardson of New Mexico. Bill cheerfully and endlessly reminds everyone that he is "America's only Hispanic governor". I know, I know. He has a most un-Hispanic name. I don't know the story behind that yet.

It turns out that there is a link to an interview on CNN, so I watch it. Seems Bill has suddenly found religion on the border security issue. He has declared a state of emergency on New Mexico's small share of the US-Mexican border. He is now concerned about illegal immigration, drug and human smuggling operations, and national security in general. Better late than never right? Don't you believe it.

I don't live in New Mexico anymore, but I still have plenty of friends and relatives there and I get the scoop on Bill. Like previous governors of that long-suffering state Bill is a bit of a spendthrift in the public sector and seems to consider the state treasury a personal asset.

When most people think of New Mexico, they think of northern New Mexico where Taos and Santa Fe are located. Despite New Mexico being my home state I never visited the North until I was in my mid-20s. Northern New Mexico is very, very liberal. I've heard Santa Fe referred to as the San Francisco of the Southwest. The south part of the state is actually quite conservative, and usually ignored by the state government, except at tax time, or when your posturing for a possible presidential bid.

Yes, that's right. For some insane reason Bill is on the short list as a Democratic candidate for president in 2008. I promise you that Bill's belated discovery of southern New Mexico and it's stretch of border is the beginning of his Hillary-esque reinvention of himself for the '08 election cycle. My suspicions about the man are confirmed by my yellow-dog Democrat step-father. He has stated that if Bill Richardson is nominated, he will vote for the Republican candidate, something he has never done before. I figure forewarned is forearmed as the saying goes. So I'll leave you with a quote from a bumper sticker I saw last month when I was visiting home: "Bill Richardson is a dipshit".

The fact is that political stupidity is a special kind of stupidity, not well correlated with intelligence, or with other varieties of stupidity. At the higher levels of the intelligentsia, the correlation may actually be inverse: the more brilliant you are, the stupider your politics. Albert Einstein seems to have thought well of Stalin; Hitlerism got its start in the universities.

One day, our grandchildren may ask us what we did when Islamic fascism threatened the free world. Some of us will say we were preoccupied with fighting that threat wherever possible; others will be able to say they fought carbon dioxide emissions. One of us will look bad.

--Dennis Prager--

Nothing could be more jolting and discordant with the vision of today's intellectuals than the fact that it was businessmen, devout religious leaders and Western imperialists who together destroyed slavery around the world. And if it doesn't fit their vision, it is the same to them as if it never happened.
